Clay Tile Against Concrete Tile

  • Clay tile. The clay color is the material, rather than applied pigment — which means it doesn't fade in any real respect. Lower in weight than concrete tile, more costly, and somewhat more brittle during handling.
  • Concrete. Heavier, a good deal less costly, available in shapes which reproduce clay. Applied pigment can weather over decades, which some homeowners see as patina and the rest read as deterioration.

Structural Load

A tile roof weighs multiple times what composition shingle does. On a house framed for that load, the weight is a non-issue. For a home that is being changed over away from asphalt, the structure needs to be checked at the outset — and strengthened when the framing won't carry the load.
